These results are not accidental!
Today, the findings of a study commissioned by UNICEF – describing the challenges faced by young people aged 18–24 in education, employment, and social participation – clearly reflect the systemic problems confronting the youth sector in Georgia.
These results are not accidental!
The research directly points to the crisis that has been building for years and has become particularly acute in recent times. On the one hand, the participatory development of youth policy has stalled – young people and youth policy actors have fewer opportunities to engage in decision-making processes, while civil society organizations, including youth organizations and associations, are facing increasing legislative and operational pressure and risks, which are felt most acutely in the regions.
Naturally, the unfavorable and repressive environment created for civil society, combined with political instability, directly affects youth programs and services.
On the other hand, the delay in the process of European integration and the uncertainty surrounding it has become another tangible challenge for young people. International educational and exchange programs are declining, youth opportunities are shrinking, there is a lack of systemic and long-term work with young people, and little support is provided for the development of non-formal, youth-led spaces.
In reality, the study makes it clear that already limited state services are unable to respond to the challenges young people face and cannot ensure the effective implementation of youth policy.
Moreover, the results show how important it is to work with young people not only in formal structures but also in non-formal educational spaces, where they can experience genuine participation, discover development opportunities, and plan for a dignified future.
Against this background, the quality and effectiveness of state youth policy comes under serious question.
Despite the situation in the country, RICDOG continues its work with young people, creating new opportunities, programs, projects, exchanges, and local training seminars for them.
Any government must ensure a safe and enabling operating environment for civil society – a free space where youth activities are not restricted by obstructive laws or policies.
